SHOTOKAN KARATE is developed from various martial arts by Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957) and his son, Yoshitaka (Gigo) Funakoshi (1906-1945). Funakoshi was born in Okinawa, Japan, and is very widely credited with popularizing Karate-do through a series of public demonstrations, and by promoting the development of university karate clubs, including those at Keio, Waseda, Hitotsubashi, Takushoku, Chuo, Gakushuin and Hosei. As the most widely practiced style, Shotokan Karate is considered a traditional and influential form of Karate-do. This informative syllabus guide is designed to bring students of karate from 10th kyu to 6th kyu, complete with step-by-step photographic demonstrations of the various techniques and combinations.
